'Theatre of the Oppressed' was developed by Augusto Boal in the 1960s in Brazil with the specific goal of empowering people and communities to deal with local problems including poverty, racism, disadvantage and illiteracy. Its techniques has been adopted widely and it is now practiced throughout the world. It is often described as a 'rehearsal for change' and acknowledges that community has knowledge about how to grow if given a forum to express itself. Theatrical techniques such as role-play and creative games are used to identify problems and to find solutions using a theatrical dialogue. The purpose of the two-day workshop is to bring together people who want to learn about this type of theatre and explore how theatrical dialogue may create opportunities for the Darwin Long Grass Community.
