WE HAVE A STUDIO

Expressions of interest NOW OPEN

To express interest please email backhouse@darwincommunityarts.org.au

The residency proposal must align with DCA’s Purpose. The artist will need to fill out a partnership agreement with DCA regarding the output and outcomes of the residency.

We encourage the resident to engage with the other residents at The BACKhOUSE; they may wish to explore possibilities for collaborating informally or formally.

The artist(s) will receive a studio at The Back House / Darwin Community Arts Inc. for a period of no longer than 6 weeks.

Rent of $60 per week will be charged to the artists during the residency period.

Artists are able to use the kitchen facilities and bathroom provided in the building.

*Please Note: No Materials are supplied by Backhouse, all art materials are the responsibility of the artist(s).
** Darwin Community Arts have subsidised half of the rent (originally $120 p/w).

The BACKhOUSE program strives to be inclusive of all artists, including: people of all communities, cultures, abilities, ages, sexuality and faiths.

  1. Stories from the DCA BACKhOUSE studio.
Introducing Artist in Residence – Tammy Cornthwaite.

Over the last few months, Tammy has been back and forth slowing down the pace at the BACKhOUSE studio, here’s what she’s been up too:

My boss Auntie Sharon Cornthwaite lives in Bega Valley Shire, Sth East NSW. She is an artist, craftsperson, artisan, educator, silversmith, jeweler, gardener, collector, and food-smith.
Together we’ll be focusing on Natural/ sustainable dying processes, starting in the kitchen byproduct of pickling locally produced food product.
I like the idea of calling this a slow-making project. “SLOW DOWN” (for mental health) with my ongoing want and need to connect and find a community in Darwin and to keep working with young people in Alice with the holistic need for arts and crafts-as-therapy approach to space-making.
Back in Alice, I see a potential collaboration with Red Cross, MHACA (Mental health association of central aust), Headspace/ Back on Track (CAAC), Akeyulerre healing center, Children’s Ground foundation, and The Meeting Place foundation. I will be contacting these orgs on my way through Alice Springs in mid-March as a quick stopover before heading South for a youth arts program in Santa Teresa community, SE of Alice. Here I will assist in the new Garden and beautification project at the youth space.
After working promotion and on-site art production in May at Wide Open Space Festival and Ghost Gun Rhythm and Blues in Alice springs. I will be back in Darwin in June in time to settle into a rhythm with DCA and help out with Fringe fest in July.
Anna Reynolds will be also assisting me with her years of knowledge as a sustainable maker and doer and connect me with other local crafters in the Darwin region.
“SLOW DOWN” arts for mental health initiative to be carried out with Darwin Community Arts from July as an example of what can be accomplished and replicated in Alice Springs.

    —-

This concept links closely with Darwin Community Art’s slow art-making vision, we are excited to discuss and develop further this project “SLOW DOWN” (for mental health) with Tammy later this year.
