Darwin artist Amina McConvell’s new installation 100 seconds to midnight is based on the format of a display home interior. This post-human space shows signs of having been inhabited, but the inhabitants are conspicuously absent.

Entering the installation is an optical experience where surfaces, walls, floor, household objects and sculptural objects are all spatially ambiguous. Using abstract geometric forms and high-key colour, wall drawings, floor drawings, objects and sculptural elements in the space merge and dissolve into each other.

The working concept for the installation is to explore the historical, as well as the contemporary influence of modernist design epitomised by the Bauhaus school of art and design (1919 -1933). Wassily Kandinsky, a lecturer at the Bauhaus stated in his seminal theory of non-objective abstraction, that art must be a child of its time. For this work to be of its time, it must dwell in discomfort, in a contemporary atmosphere of anxiety brought about by living in a period of climate crisis and mass-extinction.

Join the artist Amina McConvell on Sat 20 August for a workshop exploring Abstract Composition: Colour & Form.

Tickets to the workshop program are $30 and numbers are very limited.
