A Meter Apart : Nick Yates
Nick Yates is a saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and improviser with diverse performance experience across genres and a passion for contemporary art music.
TSince moving to Darwin in 2018, he has formed jazz quartet The Changes, and contemporary art music group Whistling Kite New Music, who debuted in sold out concerts at Darwin Festival 2020. He also performs regularly with The Djari Project, The DSO, Arafura Music Collective & The Hot n Cold Big Band.
Nick enjoys showcasing the flexibility of the saxophone across classical, jazz and experimental music. In December, Nick participated in the Australian Art Orchestra’s Creative Music Intensive, working with some of Australia’s leading composers and improvising musicians. From this program, new collaborations with Iran Sanadzadeh (Adelaide) and Alice Chance (Sydney) will soon premiere in Darwin.
This performance will survey the diversity of contemporary writing for the saxophone, both as a solo instrument and integrated with electronics. It will also include original compositions and improvised music.
TWith a strictly limited number of people in the audience, a complete ban on all devices, and with the chairs a meter apart, you are left alone, with no distractions, to fully immerse in the performance.
