ROAM – A Year of Travel: An Artist’s Visual Exploration

Back in 2016 my partner suggested we start planning and saving to go on a backpacking trip around the world. Being an avid adventurer of course I said yes! It was from this spark that the idea of maintaining a creative practice on the road was first considered. Carrying my art kit in a backpack meant that I was very restricted in materials and substrates (not only size but weight as well).

In choosing to share this body of work in 2021, one of my aims is to invite viewers to tap into the energy transfer that is created by working en plein air; to allow memory of places with a similar feeling to be triggered, thus encouraging a form of vicarious travel that becomes collaborative in nature. With international travel restricted and limited modes of transport now available, my hope is that there is a collective shift to reflect on past travels with immense gratitude and a desire to travel sustainably into the future. Along with encouraging reflection, I am hoping that sharing this work might inspire others to take up travel sketching and painting as a means to explore aspects of mindfulness and connection on the road – even if ‘the road’ just takes you to the end of your street!

As an avid traveller, this is one of the longest periods I have been without exploring somewhere new. Re-examining this body of work in the time of a global pandemic has forced a reconceptualisation of what they represent – they are now an embodiment of nostalgia, capturing an era of freedom that may or may not be repeated in history.
