Multicultural Arts
"Strong Women" songwriting project
Klubo Mulbah, Yuma Pewee, Debra Poe, Shellie Morris (front), Rebecca Toby and Kebeh Jerue.
Brown's Mart Community Arts (now Darwin Community Arts) and the Melaleuca Refugee Centre engaged Shellie Morris to facilitate two women-focussed song writing workshops, with workshop participants writing, singing and recording songs onto CD [a copy of which each of them took home].
They also performed these songs at the International Women’s Day celebrations at Brown's Mart Theatre on March 10.
The workshops were made possible with the assistance of the Office of Multicultural Affairs funding, and Darwin City Council sponsorship.
Outcomes include:
* two new songs recorded onto CD;
* enhanced cultural relationships between the African women and Indigenous singer Shellie Morris;
* increased confidence and self-esteem for the African Women who performed in front of several hundred audience members to wrapt applause;
* and increased self-esteem through the songs [Strong Women] being played on ABC radio.
