Darwin city came alive with a vibrant range of artworks, large and small, monumental and subversive, innovative and contemporary.
This popular biennial event was one of the highlights of the Darwin Fringe Festival and Darwin Festival.
This year we received an unprecedented level of entries bringing the 2006 event to a new level of community involvement, participants included four Darwin schools and the ‘Women Behind Bars’ art group from Darwin Prison as well as Indigenous works from the Tiwi Art Centre.
The popular opening event saw 350 people stroll through Civic Park to view the 28 artworks on display. Deana Murray, Curator of Visual Arts at Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, announced the winners of the judged categories. The Lord Mayor Peter Adamson formally opened the event and announced the recipient of the Major Award as Winsome Jobling for her work NESTS.
Civic Park was abuzz with visitors throughout the eight day exhibition, with over 2500 people viewing and engaging with the artworks. The public response was extremely positive from visitors praising the artworks, free catalogues and overall experience.
On the last day, Sunday August 13, the Fringe closing event began with Chief Minister Clare Martin congratulating Sculpture in the Park for its community value and announced emerging artist Rozzi George as the winner of the $2000 Paspaley People’s Choice Award for her knitted installation Tree Cozy.
This event follows on the success of Sculpture in the Park in 2002 and 2004 Sculpture in the Park and is supported by the NT Government and Darwin City Council. It is organised by the Trustees of Brown’s Mart, 24HR Art and Brown’s Mart Community Arts, as part of the Darwin Festival and Darwin Fringe, with the assistance of Darwin Visual Arts Association (DVAA) Christ Church Cathedral and local businesses.
Special thanks to the Sculpture in the Park sponsors: Paspaley for the Paspaley People Choice Award; Chubb providing security; Fosters Australia with Pure Blonde supporting the opening event; Shadetec providing the information marquee; Coleman's supporting the print material; Yellow Tail Wines supporting the opening event, also with assistance from Vintage Cellars; the award prizes have been made possible thanks to Palm Photographics, Territory Colours, Parap Family Dental, Cavenagh Medical Centre, Jackson's Drawing Supplies, Helmet Hair Studio, Darwin Central Hotel, Birch Caroll & Coyle, Creative Jewellers & Roma Bar; and many thanks to volunteers.
