Malak Wednesday Youth Afternoon, 24 August 2016

The first Malak Wednesday Youth Afternoon was held on Wednesday, 24 August 2016, at Chambers Crescent Car Park, Malak. There were up to 40 participants. The event had young people from the local area gathering for pizza and okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes), dancing, drawing, sport, badge making, music, and chatting about what activities they would like to see in the area for young people. The event was organised by the Malak and Karama Youth Engagement Working Group convened by City of Darwin, with contributors City of Darwin Youth Advisory Committee, CIty of Darwin Libraries, Darwin Community Arts, Create Foundation, Northern Territory Police, Sanderson Alliance, and many cvolunteers including Delia Lawrie MLA (member for Karama) and Jarred Illet. The event successfully trialled the concept for such gatherings, which will be continued in the coming weeks, also on Wednesdays (but with a slight schedule change to 4:30 - 6:00 PM), at Malak. Potential future activities proposed by the young people who attended on 24 August include a disco, more music, dancing, drawing, sport, and food.
